A FREE ‘Flipping’ Roast!

Brace & Browns on Whiteladies Road have only recently opened, so recently in fact they don’t appear to even have a phone number yet! So they are using quite a unique offer to attract some new business. Their award winning chef is cooking a good old sunday roast, which you are all invited to ‘enjoy’.
But when it comes to pay the bill, there is a twist! You toss a coin for it, if you guess right it’s a FREE lunch, guess wrong and you’ll have to pay.
Sounds like fun as long as the lunch is good and not twice the price, but I will tell you next week as I am going there this weekend.

First acts confirmed for WOMAD at Bristol Zoo music festival

The first confirmed acts have been revealed for a mini WOMAD music festival held at Bristol Zoo this summer.

The Zoo will host an evening of music, dance and workshops from around the world on Saturday, June 11, set in its beautiful, 12-acre botanical gardens, home to over 400 animal species from lions, lizards and lemurs to gorillas, geckos and giant tortoises.

WOMAD at Bristol Zoo is part of a series of events being staged this year to celebrate the Zoo’s 175th birthday.

We can reveal three of the six unique acts, they are: Muntu Valdo, of Cameroon, Rua Macmillan, from Scotland and Siyaya of Zimbabwe.

Visitors to WOMAD at Bristol Zoo will enjoy two stages offering some of the best in world music, as well as children’s workshops, stalls, and entertainment. And if that’s not enough, visitors can also visit a host of different animal species at home in the Zoo, as some of the Zoo’s animal houses will be kept open late.

Muntu Valdo’s music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery. His mesmerising solo set juxtaposes his raw, passionate voice and intensely emotive melodies with an ingenious use of loops, samples and effects.

He has played with some of the great names of African music, toured with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and explored exciting new collaborations with the likes of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express.

Originally from Nairn, in the Scottish Highlands, fiddler Rua Macmillan has quickly made a name for himself as one of the rising stars in the highly competitive world of Scottish traditional music. Rua performs in a trio with Tia Files (from Bodega) on guitar and Adam Brown on bodhran.

Having graduated in Scottish Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Rua has toured extensively throughout Europe and the U.S and was awarded the prestigious title of BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2009.

The third confirmed act for WOMAD at Bristol Zoo is Siyaya, a high-energy group of musicians, percussionists, vocalists and dancers whose show encompasses universal themes and traditional stories, interwoven with a passion and a level of humanity deeply rooted in Zimbabwean culture.

Chris Smith, WOMAD event organiser, said: “We are excited to be announcing the first of many great acts performing at WOMAD at Bristol Zoo this summer. Muntu Valdo, Rua Macmillan and Siyaya are all world-class musicians and performers, and we are delighted that they will be coming to entertain and delight visitors at the event.”

He added: “The central aim of the WOMAD festival is to celebrate the many forms of music, art and dance from around the world, and Bristol Zoo is home to wildlife from across the globe, so it is the perfect setting for what is sure to be a fantastic mini festival.”

Tickets are now available for WOMAD at Bristol Zoo, with discounts for those who buy in advance. To find out more visit the Zoo website at http://www.bristolzoo.org.uk/womad-at-bristol-zoo-a-wild-night-of-world-music or phone the Zoo on 0117 974 7300.

WOMAD – World of Music, Arts and Dance – is an internationally established festival which brings together artists from all over the globe.

As well as offering visitors a great evening out, WOMAD at Bristol Zoo will also help raise money for gorilla conservation.

Advance tickets for WOMAD at Bristol Zoo cost £20 (adult) and £5 (child) or £45 for a family ticket. Under 3s are free. Further discounts apply for Zoo members who book in advance. Doors open at 6pm.

Clifton Supension Bridge are set to increase toll

Clifton Suspension Bridge - The Blue GorgeClifton Suspension Bridge have stated that the rise in the bridge toll is ‘inevitable’. The last rise was back in 2007 when the toll was increased fro 20 pence per crossing to 50 pence per crossing. Till now that toll has remained the same, The chairman of the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust put the increase down to substantial repair work that has been carried our recently.
But with imminent work to repair erosion damage and to have the bridge clean looking to cost in the region of four hundred thousand pounds and the future repair programme predicted to be in the region of 8 million pounds Dayrell McArthur said the tolls would have to be increase for “important maintenance projects”.

It is predicted the toll could be increased by as much as 100 percent taking the cost up to £1.

Of course any increase is subject to approval by the Department for Transport, Bristol City Council and North Somerset Council.

It has to be said that the Suspension Bridge originally designed by the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel is the iconic symbol of the city and Clifton so we personally are right behind keeping this national treasure in tip top condition.

The stunning picture of the Clifton Suspension bridge is supplied courtesy of Steve Townsend, a very talented local photographer.

Just Clifton website gets revamped!

Well, if you have been to our website before, you have probably noticed www.justclifton.co.uk is looking a little bit different! That’s because two years ago, web designer Craig Brothers launched this site as a free promotional service to his clients in Clifton. “I live and work in Clifton and originally built the site as an example of my work. The added bonus to the clients was that they could advertise for FREE”. Two years on and the site is performing very well, so well in fact it could not be ignored any longer. “I receive calls all the time from people wanting to know more about Clifton. Some wanted to know what hotels were available, where you could buy a wedding dress, book a wine tasting etc… When I originally came up with the idea I knew it had potential, it was not designed to be a full blown information site, but that all had to change.” So here we are, the site has had a total overhaul and there are a host of new ideas to follow. “I have put in a lot of effort so I am hoping the local people, businesses and visitors to Clifton with enjoy using the site. My ethos has not changed, there is still a huge amount FREE to businesses and users to help the site evolve and grow. In the mean time I am going to knock on doors and strive to get everyone in Clifton to contribute to the site: Listings, News Stories, Events, Photo’s”. I have a few tricks up my sleeve, so watch this space!
